Sodium Propionate is the salt form of propionic acid, which is an organic acid. It is toxic to mold and species of bacteria, it usually is used as food preservative in food products. It ocurrs white powder, soluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol. CAS#137-40-6
Usage:
Its primary uses: antifungal agent, antiseptic agent (topical), disinfectant, food additive, ophthalmic agent.
First of all, it is approved for use as a food additive in the EU, USA, Australia nad New Zealand.
In food industry, it is commonly used as a preservative, prevents the growth of mold and some bacteria, thereby prolonging the shelf life of packaged baked goods and processed cheese products.
